Repetitive Procurement of Mature Gametes from Individual Sea Stars and Sea Urchins
نویسنده
چکیده
The various conventional methods of procuring ripe gametes from sea stars (1, 2), and sea urchins (3, 4, 6) are well suited for experiments in which large quantities or pooled lots of gametes from different individuals are required . It is often desirable, however, to perform experiments on a few cells, under well controlled conditions and from a single individual . For this purpose I have devised methods which permit repetitive procurement of healthy echinoderm eggs from a single animal for periods of a week or more . In addition, for various microscopic methods of observation and measurement, one may wish to select and use females whose eggs possess few light scattering or birefringent inclusions . The degree of optical clarity of eggs is fairly uniform for one individual, but can vary widely from one individual to another .

Morphology of Gamete Membrane Fusion and of Sperm Entry into Oocytes of the Sea Urchin
Sea urchin gametes predominate in molecular studies of fertilization, yet relatively little is known of the subcellular aspects of sperm entry in this group. Accordingly, it seemed desirable to make a detailed examination of sperm entry phenomena in sea urchins with the electron microscope. Gametes of the sea urchins Arbacia punctulata and Lytechinus variegatus were used in this study. Samples ...
متن کاملBindin from a sea star.
The genetic basis for the evolution of development includes genes that encode proteins expressed on the surfaces of sperm and eggs. Previous studies of the sperm acrosomal protein bindin have helped to characterize the adaptive evolution of gamete compatibility and speciation in sea urchins. The absence of evidence for bindin expression in taxa other than the Echinoidea has limited such studies...
متن کاملEmbryonic, larval and juvenile development of tropical sea urchin, Diadema setosum
Diadema setosum (Leske, 1778), is one of the common echinoids widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific Ocean, where it occurs from the Red Sea, Persian Gulf and the east coast of Africa to Japan, Australia and Malaysia. To investigate the developmental basis of morphological changes in embryos and larvae, we documented the ontogeny of D. setosum in a controlled laboratory condition at the In...
متن کاملPhylogenomic Analyses of Echinodermata Support the Sister Groups of Asterozoa and Echinozoa
Echinoderms (sea urchins, sea stars, brittle stars, sea lilies and sea cucumbers) are a group of diverse organisms, second in number within deuterostome species to only the chordates. Echinoderms serve as excellent model systems for developmental biology due to their diverse developmental mechanisms, tractable laboratory use, and close phylogenetic distance to chordates. In addition, echinoderm...
متن کاملBiosynthesis of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Sea Urchins: Molecular and Functional Characterisation of Three Fatty Acyl Desaturases from Paracentrotus lividus (Lamark 1816)
Sea urchins are broadly recognised as a delicacy and their quality as food for humans is highly influenced by their diet. Lipids in general and the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) in particular, are essential nutrients that determine not only the nutritional value of sea urchins but also guarantee normal growth and reproduction in captivity. The contribution of endogenous produ...
